Lessons from an Online Compassion Circle (ie: making this whole Coronavirus outbreak bearable)
I want to share something I learned on Friday morning that's making it so much easier for me to deal with this time of uncertainty.
13 women from 5 different countries came together in the first Online Compassion Circle last Thursday/Friday (March 19, 2020/March 20th in Korea… scroll down to see when the next ones are).
No one was there to give advice or to fix each other. They were all there to share one of the most human acts possible:
offering compassion.
It’s normal to want answers and to want to provide them too. We live in a world that functions on timelines and this makes us believe we need to be sure of the future in order to move forward.
However, the truth is, there’s another part to life that we rarely acknowledge.
This is the part that's below the surface. It doesn’t function on action or timelines. It functions on stillness and yielding to the unknown. We need this part of life just as much as we need the other.
Consider this metaphor. Even if we can’t see the seed under the earth, it’s doing a lot at its slow, silent pace. After facing much uncertainty, and only when the conditions are right, that seed grows into a magnificent tree. It doesn’t know if water will come, or if the sun will shine. It simply allows the moments to unfold and trusts.
This is the metaphor I kept seeing while the women shared their fears of the unknown and their very real concerns for their loved ones.
But beyond all the metaphors, during this Covid-19 craze, we’re all being asked to allow the moment to unfold and trust what's coming.
I'm not saying we shouldn't fight for our rights or that we need to trust leaders who are abusing the system. I’m also not saying that the moments we’re each dealing with are simple. Some of us are facing some tricky and even dangerous situations.
What I'm recognizing, and what I heard in each experience that was shared on Friday morning, is that what will bring solace right now is focusing on the moment and not getting wrapped up in what might be.
This is what the majority of the women in the circle kept coming back to:
taking this time to make room for what’s important. Cutting back on non-essentials.
decluttering their homes to make space for abundance.
spending the time with their loved ones (or fur babies) either face to face (in quarantine mode of course) or online.
reconnecting with nature.
These are all acts of living in the moment, which is also a statement in allowing the unknown to take over.
And this is what I learned on Friday morning from all those amazing women.
Peace,
Josette
